For the month of October, AKD will be going pink to support the McGrath Foundation and raise awareness and support to help fund McGrath Breast Care Nurses who provide invaluable support and care for people who are experiencing breast cancer.

In 2016, breast cancer was the second most commonly diagnosed cancer in Australia and the most commonly diagnosed cancer in women. It is estimated that in 2020 it will become the most commonly diagnosed cancer among persons overall and among women.

AKD have set a goal of raising $50,000 for the charity this month, in what is their third year partnering with the charity.

Acting Maintenance Manager at the Tumut site, Gordon Kelso, said that the cause is personal for many in the company.

“Quite a few people in this business have been touched by it, even personally my wife’s going through it,” he explained.

Mr Kelso said that AKD is hosting a raffle across the site with donations from local businesses, and that they have also been hosting gold coin donation barbecues every Wednesday.

“We had 75 here yesterday (Wednesday) and most people all gave, it wasn’t a gold coin donation- most people gave [a bit more], up to $10 most people, because at the end of the day it’s a good cause,” he said.

“Small communities are very good at that (giving back).”

Mr Kelso also said that any money raised throughout the month will be dollar-matched by AKD.

“Throughout the group the company has seven or eight sawmills and other plants…so everything each of the sites individually raise the company will match dollar-for-dollar,” he said.

All AKD team members and customers are being encouraged to wear pink shirts and shoelaces for the month of October, with AKD also supplying pink face masks free of charge to all employees and asking them to also make a personal donation to the charity.

The company has also changed their product wrap for the duration of October to include the pink AKD logo, the McGrath foundation logo and the donation link.

Any local businesses or community members wishing to donate to the cause can do so online.
