Batlow CWA tops handicraft scores

Jasper Makeham receives the Emily Martin Scholarship from Hume Group CWA president, Tina Billing of Batlow.

REPRESENTATIVES of the 12 CWA branches, including Tumut and Batlow, making up Hume Group attended a meeting at Junee on 5 March where handicraft and cooking entries were judged. 

Fifty-five entries were received including cakes, puddings, biscuits, slices, jam and pickles. 

Guest Judge Wendy Chomley awarded Best Fruit Cake to Marlene Clark of Kikoira Branch and highest overall score to Noelene Purshouse.

A wide variety of handicraft skills were judged by Rhonda Sellenthin including quilting, dressmaking, knitting, crochet, beadwork and various forms of embroidery. Highest scoring branch was Batlow, followed closely by Gundagai Branch.

Winning group entries will now be forwarded to the State competition to be announced during State Conference at Wagga Wagga in May.

Another highlight of the day was presentation of the Emily Martin Scholarship. This is awarded every second year to a relative of a member, living in the Hume Group area who is studying for a career in medicine or other medical-related field. This year’s recipient is Jasper Makeham, grandson of Margaret Makeham of Eurongilly Branch. Jasper is in his second year of nursing and hopes to follow this with further study to become a paramedic.

Jasper attended, along with his grandparents, and received $2,000 towards his education expenses.
