In a timely nod to both the past and the present, the Boyd family are set to celebrate the lives of Thomas and Helen Boyd during Tumut’s 200th anniversary year.
The Thomas and Ellen Boyd descendants/reunion/get together will be held at Gillmore Hall on November 16 and 17 as part of the 200 year commemoration since Thomas journeyed through the district as a member of the famed Hume and Hovell expedition.
Thomas and Ellen later took up land at Gilmore and became respected members of the local community.
They raised a large family in their house at Windowie, close to Gilmore Creek.
The children of the couple were Margaret born 1840, and who married Robert John Crouch, Bridget born in 1855, Thomas born in 1845, James born in 1846, Mary, born 1840 who married James Allen, Rosannah born in 1848 and marred to Robert Currie, Edward, born in 1849, Robert Patrick Quinn born 1864 and killed in action in the Boer War in 1901. Two unnamed twins born in 1858 are buried near the family home at Windowie.
The anniversary event this month will be open from 10am to 4pm on both days and will have displays of photos and documents, and will be a great chance to meet other descendants.
The weekend is in the form of a casual drop in as you please, and stay as long as you like, and will be open to all descendants and to anyone else who is simply interested in the history of the Boyd family and the local area.
If you have any information or photos, please take copies along to help build the historical record of the extended family.
There will also be a lot of information available for copying at the event.
