THE Tumut Bulls got back on the playing field at Jarrah Sportsground on Saturday night, with three Tumut sides scoring two wins from three trial matches against the CSU Reddies.
The first and second grade Bulls scored convincing wins over the Reddies, and showed great promise in doing so. The Bullettes, defending SIRU champions, were significantly understrength when well beaten by an impressive Reddies team in the night’s first clash.
Bulls president Kurt Greenhalgh said he was very happy with how things went and the good crowd that turned up.
“The quality of football was very good for a trial match,” he said.
He said the Bullettes team that played on Saturday was missing keys players and they would be much stronger when the SIRU competition gets underway.
“We are still waiting for two or three players to come back,” he said.
“We’ve got two girls coming back from Fiji for the season.”
On Saturday, not only did coach Kylie Jensen play in the match, she was joined by her daughters Hannah and Katelyn.
Greenhalgh was understandably happy by the form shown by the second and first grade teams.
“They came bursting out of the gates, which was good to see,” he said.
“We’ve got two imports still to come, a prop and a centre.”
The one bit of bad news to come out of the night was an injury to promising 17-year-old Bull Dusty Hood.
“Dusty dislocated his shoulder,” Greenhalgh said.
Young Hood played in the second-grade match, and then went on in the first grade match when the injury happened.
“Unfortunately he will miss the first half of the season,” Greenhalgh said.
“It was particularly unfortunate because he had Brumbies rep training the next day.”
Apart from that the Bulls and Bullettes emerged from the matches largely unscathed.
“There were a couple of niggles, but we are three weeks out from the start of the competition so they should be all right,” he said.
The Bulls will get the SIRU season underway against the Albury Steamers on Saturday 3 May at Albury. Tumut’s first home game will be played the following Saturday against Waratahs. Ladies Day will be on 28 June and Charity/Sponsors Day on 5 July. Ball Drop/Old Boys Day will be on 2 August.
