Clarke and Daniels win OZ Trophy

Tumut Royal Hotel’s Greg Kabar with OZ Trophy winners Jeff Daniels and Ted Clarke.

The annual Commercial Hotel and Royal Hotel OZ Trophy at Tumut Golf club was held over the weekend and has been taken out by Ted Clarke and Jeff Daniels who scored 93 across the two days for a six-shot win over Mark Partridge and George Dashwood. 

Clarke and Daniels were the top scorers on both days, with 45 on the Saturday and 48 on the Sunday, making it a comfortable victory in the end. 

In the ladies, Karen Webb and Jill McIntyre top the scorecard on Saturday with 45, while on Sunday, Cynthia Carroll and Pam Crawford were the daily leaders with 43. 

The men’s winners over the two days were Bill Masters and Barry Lang on 88, ahead of Mark Goode and Peter McCarthy on 85, while the ladies’ winners were Jill McIntyre and Karen Webb on 86 ahead of Cynthia Carroll and Pam Crawford on 82. 

There were six ball competition winners with Robert Crawford and Graeme Hartshorn hitting 85, through to Rowan Diggins and Todd Broad on 81.

On the Saturday, the nearest to the pins for the men were Tony Bayley on the fourth (2.22m), Geoff Brain on the ninth (2.23m) and Barry Freebody on the 17th (67cm)

With the ladies, the nearest to the pins were Jan Kendall on the fourth (78cm), Pam Crawford on ninth (1.59m) and Jan Kendall again on the 17th (4.48m)


Sunday’s nearest to the pins for the men were George Bashwood on the fourth (3.09m), Peter McCarthy on the ninth (1.62m) and Tony Bayley on the 17th (2.53m).

The ladies only had two nearest to the pins on Sunday, with Pam Crawford going closest on the fourth (52cm) and Lyn Burgmann closest on the ninth (27cm). 

In other golfing news, the Thursday Chook Run that was played as a stroke event on the front nine on January 21 saw 39 golfers in action and Bunny Carroll was the winner on count back, edging Ian McDougall with a score of 29. 

Louie Mulvihill led the 12 ball competition winners on 30, through to Brian Dehnert on 33.

Robert Preston was the nearest to the pin on hole four (33cm) and William Hughes went the closest on hole nine (11.2m).

15 golfers contested Tuesday’s front nine stroke event for the seniors and Steve Hung was the overall winner on 28, getting in via count back over Ross Kell, who led the five ball competition winners through to Ron Sutton on 31. 

Peter Carolan was the nearest to the pin on hole nine, falling a mere 1cm short of a hole-in-one.


In midweek results, 11 golfers played an 18-hole stableford and Daniel Dixon knocked off brother Tim Dixon by one shot, recording 41. 

Ian McDougall led the five ball competition winners on 40, through to Col Duncan on 35.
