THE gates are set to open for the 149th Tumut Show at around 1.30pm today (Friday) – are you ready?
Show Society president, Ian Meharg said in his introduction to this year’s show “It is with great pride and pleasure to not only welcome everyone to out 149th Annual Show, but the Society is also celebrating the 200th anniversary of Tumut’s discovery by the explorers Hume and Hovell.
This celebration for Hume and Hovell will set the commemorations for the remainder of the year highlighting the 200 years since the explorers passed through the Tumut Valley on their way south.
Tumut and its surrounding towns were founded by these pioneer explorers and have been honoured in many ways through the Hume and Hovell Trail, monuments and history archives.
“For those attending tonight we have some exciting new events to compliment Sideshow Alley,” Mr Meharg said.
“This is the first time that fireworks have been included for the opening night, along with live music a bottom bar and free bus shuttle services which will allow patrons to enjoy a night out without having to drive.
“The inclusion of live local music, new bar facilities and fireworks will all set the scene for what is expected to be bumper show this year.”
Mr Meharg said Saturday (tomorrow) features new ideas with the woodchopping, dog trials, fat lamb competition and cattle parade, all complimenting the usual show activities.
“None of these events, new or existing, would happen without the dedication of the committee judges, stewards and volunteers.
“I thank them all,” Mr Meharg said.
“And without our sponsors we would not be able to supply a great show – many have stepped up big time this year and on behalf of the show society – we thank you.”
Features at this year’s Tumut show include the Stockman’s Challenge which starts on Saturday morning in the sand arena.
Sponsored this year by Elders Tumut, the Stockman’s Challenge is all about horses and their riders.
The riders have to guide their steads through a course of objects simulating a ride ‘in the bush’ where the horse has to pass under overhanging objects, jump low hurdles, representing logs, allow the riders to ‘pick’ an object off a post (simulating a tree) and cross a stream. These are just some of the challenges facing both the rider and the horse judging their guidance and riding skills.
The Stockman’s Challenge will be followed by the Camp Draft event, also at the sand arena.
This event again challenges both horse and rider in rounding and guiding steers through a series of set rules.
There are also barrel races – and all events are against the clock.
This is a great spectator event for anyone who loves to watch horse and rider facing fast-paced challenges.
The Encouragement Draft will be held tonight from 6pm with the main event at the conclusion of the Stockman’s Challenge.
