Local businesses recognised in Murray-Riverina Business Awards

Several Tumut businesses have been recognised in the Murray-Riverina Business Awards, to be held in Albury in September.

Lyndal Porritt from the Adelong Veterinary Clinic has been nominated as a Young Entrepreneur; Hugh Packard from Valmar Support Services is up for Business Leader of the Year; White Moth Studios is in the Excellence in Small Business category; Valmar Support Services has been nominated for both Excellence in Business and Excellence in Innovation; and the Snowy Mountains Animal Rescue Team (SMART Animal Sanctuary and Rehoming Centre) have been recognised for Excellence in Sustainability.

Tumut Regional Chamber of Commerce President Lorraine Wysman said the value of the awards for local businesses should not be underestimated.

“It is really exciting for the businesses,” she said.

“I think when you’re operating a day-to-day business you don’t really have a full perspective on how you are competing, so when you are recognised against your fellow business owners it’s a great sense of achievement and a great pat on the back.

“The publicity is unbelievable. It gives you credibility; people say, ‘wow, I’ve never had reason to deal with them, but I now have that opportunity and I’m now going to do this or that.’”

Sarah Miller, the woman behind Excellence in Small Business nominee White Moth Studios, knew she would be going into the Riverina-Murray Business Awards when she won in the same category in Tumut. She said the award is a good sign she made the right decision to move to Tumut and open up her own studio.

“It’s a very big honour for someone who’s come from out of town not so long ago to be, not only welcomed, but also to have been nominated – I’m very honoured,” she said.

“I feel very grateful that the people of Tumut have given me this opportunity to go so far.”

Moving to a small country town to start up a design and marketing studio seems like a big call, but Sarah said she knew there was a gap in the market in this part of the world.

“I wouldn’t have done it if I thought it was too big of a risk,” she said.

“It seemed like something that people were asking for. Whenever I would mention the direction that people could go in in their online marketing they were all ears and wanted to know more, and I think people were looking for someone to point them in the right direction.”

The awards will be held at the Albury Entertainment Centre on Friday, September 15.

Tickets are available until September 8 from the NSW Business Chamber, at https://events.nswbc.com.au/Detail/EVE1705308/
