Mayor praises concert

Sir, – As neighbours to the Tumut Showground we have nothing but praise for the way in which the organisers, promoters, performers and patrons not only made the event in Tumut an unforgettable one, but showcased the Tumut showground as a great venue for such events.

Having lived near the showground for over twenty years we have watched events such as annual shows, campdrafts, team penning, rodeos, cutting, pony club, gymkhanas and so much more, but the weekend’s concert set a new benchmark for how the venue can also be used.

It is fantastic to see the facility being used and we see on a regular basis just how hard the trust, committee and volunteers work to develop and maintain it.

When Col Woodman flagged his idea months ago, no one could have imagined just how amazing it would be for this community. To be the first of 17 concerts spanning four months, five states (more concerts and venues yet to be announced) and featuring some of Australia’s most iconic and respected artists is nothing short of incredible. All those years ago Tumut had ACDC at the Racecourse and now Jimmy Barnes and ‘friends’ at the showground.

Despite unusually hot conditions, over 3000 patrons made the most of the opportunity and the Tumut Showground was the spot (with a little help from the mist tents and sprinklers).

The town was buzzing with visitors and no doubt will continue to buzz as everyone talks about how fantastic it was.

Congratulations to Col for bringing it to Tumut and to every group, organisation and individual who ensured the event ran like clockwork despite the stinking hot weather. Everyone deserves three cheers (including Jimmy Barnes, Baby Animals, Ian Moss, Dragon and Chocolate Starfish).
