New producers lunch for Taste Riverina

A new event is coming to Tumut as part of Taste Riverina, the month-long ‘menu of events’ during October celebrating the year’s harvest and showcasing food, wine, beer and agricultural produce and experiences.

Emma Murray and Robyn Harvey are putting on ‘Our Table: A Taste of our Region,’ which will take place on October 28 at Gilmore Hall.

“It’s basically a producers lunch,” explained Emma Murray.

“We want to showcase the produce of the region in an innovative way, and we’re using as many local ingredients as we can. We’ve engaged a chef from Wagga, Soon Lee Low, to turn our ingredients into something magical.

“It’ll be a really beautiful, gourmet experience of our region, starting with canapés taking in that beautiful Gilmore view – which is another way of showcasing the region – before we go inside for two courses.”

Soon Lee Low is a renowned chef: after completing his apprenticeship at Madam Fang & Shakahari (modern Asian), Melbourne, Soon then went on to work at Ishmus Of Kra (Thai), Chef de Partie at the NOBU Crown (Japanese and Peruvian) before travelling globally and working as Chef De Partie – Beach House Maldives, A Waldorf Astoria Hotel (French Cuisine and Maldivian Cuisine), London – Sushi Samba (Brazilian, Japanese) and Duck & Waffle (Modern British), before settling in at Wagga in 2014. Local aspiring chef Brad Mullins will be assisting.

They will be creating meals using ingredients from producers such as Highfields Farm and Woodlands lamb, Tumut River Brewing Co beer, Courabyra Wines and Obsession Wines, Wilgro Orchards apple products, Stella Rosa bread, Wall’s Creek zucchinis, Snowy Mountains Trout, Happy Wombat hazelnuts, and Yarra Farm eggs.

The lunch will cost $65, including a bus to and from Tumut to Gilmore and a drink on arrival, with the Blakeney Millar Foundation having chipped in to keep the ticket costs down. Robyn and Emma are both volunteers, and are planning to see how this year’s event goes before they make it an annual occurrence.

“We’re both relatively new to the area, I’ve been here about five years and just always thought that something like this would be a lovely thing to do – it’s something that I would have loved to go to!” she said.
