THE Apple Thief is cheering a major win at the Australian Cider Awards in Melbourne after picking up Australia’s Best Single Varietal Cider Award.

The inaugural David Pickering Memorial Trophy was awarded for Batlow-based The Apple Thief’s Kingston Black cider which also won Gold at this year’s Sydney Royal Beer and Cider Show.

Dave Purcell, orchardist and founder of The Apple Thief Cider, said, “I’m very honoured for this prestigious reward because of what David Pickering did for the industry. He was a great inspiration and was always doing things for others in the craft cider community. The award recognises the amazing efforts of our Cider Maker Campbell Meeks who is consistently producing exceptional quality cider.”

The new trophy, dedicated to the late David Pickering, a champion of the cider community, reflects the growing appreciation for single varietal ciders across the nation.

Mr Purcell said the award further inspired The Apple Thief as it worked to elevate the craft of cider-making in Australia while continuing the construction of its Cider House in Batlow. This project aims to create a vibrant visitor destination that will not only enhance the local community but also celebrate the rich orchard heritage of the region.

“I grew up here, so it means everything to me and my family to bring The Apple Thief home to Batlow,” says Mr Purcell.

“We’re sure locals will enjoy The Cider House as much as visitors from further afield.”

Set to open in early 2025, The Apple Thief Cider House aims at offering an immersive experience. Guests will journey through the orchard, taking in the seasonal beauty of diverse apple and fruit varieties. Inside, the venue will feature cider tastings, casual dining, and an expanded menu with picnic platters to enjoy under the apple trees.

This project is supported by the Bushfire Local Economic Recovery Fund, underscoring The Apple Thief’s commitment to community recovery and growth. With the backing of local supporters and businesses like the new Regional Australia Bank branch, the future looks bright, says Mr Purcell.

While the new Cider House is under construction, the temporary Cider House cellar door is open for tastings and snacks from Wednesday to Monday, offering a sample of its award-winning ciders, including favourites like Pink Lady and Braeburn Gala, as well as limited editions.
