TUMUT Girls’ soccer is set for its biggest season ever with another girls team set to be added to the one which competed last year.

“This is the biggest year in female football for Tumut Eagles,” club spokesperson Sara Peel said.

“I think this is due to having a girls team last year, as a lot of girls don’t like playing on a mixed team and we have younger siblings signing up to play this year.”

In recent years, the profile of women’s sport, especially team sport like football, has risen greatly, and this has not gone unnoticed at a local level.

“The increased profile of the matildas has certainly helped boost numbers,” Sara said.

She and many others believe girl’s soccer teams have much to offer potential players.

“Girls-only teams are great for boosting confidence in soccer,” she said.

“Soccer is great for improved coordination, increased confidence, sportsmanship, social interaction with peers who they may not know from school as we have players from Adelong, Tumut Public, Franklin Public.”

There is still opportunity for girls to get involved in girls-only soccer in the upcoming season.

“Registrations are still open and the link can be found on the Tumut Eagles Football Club Facebook page,” Sara said.

“Team nominations need to be in to Football Wagga Wagga on  24 March, so prompt registration is required so we can nominate the correct teams.”
