TUMUT Public School basketball teams have made the school and town proud with their outstanding performance at the Basketball NSW Schools Regional Tournament held in Wagga Wagga last week.
Competing against schools from across the region, both the boys and girls teams secured wins in their divisions, earning a coveted spot in the upcoming State Championships.
In the boys’ competition, the team displayed impressive skill and teamwork, winning all three games in their pool.
They defeated Wagga Christian College, The Riverina Anglican College, and St Patrick’s Gundagai before taking on McAuley Catholic College Tumut in an exciting grand final. With an impressive score of 31-15, the Tumut boys clinched the division two title.
The next day, Tumut Public girls’ team continued the momentum with two strong victories over Holy Spirit Lavington and Wagga Christian College. Heading into the grand final, they faced Wyalong, a team known for their recent successes and who had recently attended the PSSA State Championship. Despite Wyalong’s strong track record, Tumut Public girls rose to the challenge and secured a well-deserved 29-14 win, showing incredible resilience and teamwork.
Their teacher and manager, Katherine Penrith, said she felt incredibly proud of the determination and sportsmanship shown by both teams throughout the tournament.
“Huge credit also goes to coaches Luke Penrith and Scott Thornton for their invaluable guidance and support,” she said.
“This accomplishment wouldn’t have been possible without the unwavering encouragement from our parents and the excellent organisation by Basketball NSW. We’re looking forward to cheering our teams on at the state championships on November 26 and 27.”
