TUMUT Public School is celebrating an extraordinary achievement as both the Girls’ and Boys’ Basketball Teams were crowned State Champions of Division 2, at the Basketball NSW Schools State Championships held on Tuesday 26th and Wednesday 27th November at Penrith Regional Sports Centre.
The Girls’ team had an intense start to their campaign on Tuesday, narrowly losing their first game to Wyalong 14-13. Undeterred, they bounced back with commanding victories over Killarney Heights Public School (26-7) and Montgrove College (40-7). Their efforts secured a spot in the semi-finals on Wednesday, where they faced a determined Killarney Heights team once again. The semi-final was a tight contest, but the girl’s showcased resilience and teamwork to secure a 21-14 win.
In the Grand Final, the girls met Wyalong once more. This time, they dominated the court, claiming an impressive 27-7 victory.
“Their teamwork, determination, and spirit were on full display,” said their proud teacher and manager, Mrs. Penrith.
“The girls worked so hard, and it showed in their amazing performance.”
The Boys’ team had an equally thrilling journey, starting with three pool games on Tuesday. They triumphed in a nail-biter against Redfield College, clawing their way to a 28-26 win. Convincing victories over Cooerwull Public School (43-14) and Picton Public School (29-12) ensured their spot at the top of the pool.
Wednesday’s quarterfinal saw a friendly yet competitive match against local rivals, Tumut’s McAuley Catholic College, where the boys powered through with a 35-4 win. The semi-final was a rematch against Redfield College, and the boys once again edged out their opponents in a thrilling 28-26 game.
The Grand Final against Central Coast Adventist was a nail-biting showdown. With the game going down to the wire, the boys held their nerve to secure a 25-22 victory and claim the championship title.
This marks an incredible second State Champion title this year for the Tumut Boys’ team, who were also crowned PSSA State Champions in October.
“I couldn’t be prouder of these talented players,” Mrs Penrith shared.
“Both teams showed incredible heart, determination, and sportsmanship throughout the competition. They’ve represented Tumut Public School and our community with so much pride.
“A huge congratulations to the players, and a heartfelt thank you to the coaches, Scott Thornton and Luke Penrith, as well as the parents who supported the teams every step of the way.
“This unforgettable achievement, with two state titles in one year for the boys and the girls’ remarkable performance, will be remembered as a moment of immense pride for Tumut Public School and the entire community. Congratulations, State Champions!”
