The days are now longer and full of trout fishing. Something about the opening weekend just feels like the start of life year after year.
The endless options for adventures up those pokey streams and hiking along the big rivers on our doorstep are finally back on.
Reality of it is that fishing this season might be a bit of a challenge, but is a challenge a bad thing? I personally like a bit of tough fishing. It forces you out of your comfort zone and to look for that secret honey hole on a river somewhere.
In good news, the mighty Tumut seems to be fishing quite well.
Haul Fly Fishing’s new local guide had a great few days out for the opening weekend with some excellent captures all predominantly on heavily weighted tungsten black nymphs Size 14.
I found myself catching a lot of smaller rainbows on green cadis grubs (a favorite of mine) in size 12.
They were all more concentrated in the riffled waters, not unline that downstream of the Goobergandra junction bridge.
Fishing in the peripheral streams has been hard yakka. I found a couple of small fish in a 4 hour session on the Goob and nothing on the Gilmore. That’s fly fishing.
I’d love to hear how some of the bait or lure guys got on if you can share a result to [email protected] and no need for specifics or giving away secret spots but some tactics and anything you’re willing to share would be greatly appreciated.
Make sure you are fishing licenses are current and get amongst the world class fishery we have here in the region and always take your rubbish with you and pick up the rubbish of the less considerate.
