A-Grade games between the Wildcats and Middy Mites always turn out to be an even tussle and it was no different at the Elm Drive Hockey Fields on Saturday, with the Wildcats getting up 2-1.
Wildcats were first to score through Naomi Jeffery, who took a strong strike at the ball off a penalty corner to put it in the goal.
It wasn’t long until Middy Mites got a break up field and through some good work from Amanda Kendall, took a shot which snuck through into the goal, to level the score at 1-all.
Erin Tobin, Maddi Sutton and Raquel Streckfuss combined well to work the ball up for Wildcats.
Wildcats’ young winger Karidee Streckfuss wasn’t fazed by the more experienced players of Middy Mites and had a great game and didn’t miss a ball that came her way.
Lyndall Hannan was strong in defence for Middy Mites, making it hard for Wildcat’s attack to break through.
Bec Marsh had a good game after she stepped up into goal for Middy Mites.
Jane Arragon had an unreal game and was one of the strongest for Middy Mites.
Late in the second half it was Naomi Jeffery with her always consistent play who again scored for Wildcats to seal the victory for her team.
In the second A-Grade game, Adelong’s Quicksticks played Batlow Mustangs, with the Adelong side winning 4-0.
Mustangs were undermanned again, playing short, which made it difficult to stop the Quicksticks attack.
Quicksticks were putting the pressure on Mustangs constantly.
Nat Wilson scored first off a penalty corner, which was hit out from Jodie Uhr, who passed back to Nat in the middle and she put the ball past the defence to start Quicksticks scoring.
Nat Wilson was then able to get a penalty stroke after a great effort from Donna Carroll to stop her shot but unfortunately did so with her feet.
Young gun Taylah Wilson stepped up against the experience of Mustangs goalkeeper Sue Fielding and with a great flick in the air, Sue got a pad to it but couldn’t stop it giving Taylah a goal for the Quicksticks.
Mustangs Alicia Magann and Lyn Bathgate worked tirelessly in defence but the constant pressure from Quicksticks proved too much and they just couldn’t keep them out.
Another goal came from Jacinta O’Donovan, putting the ball past the goalkeeper from deep within the backline.
Then a great individual goal from Jodie Uhr, who showed her great skill, put an end to the contest and sealed a strong 4-0 victory for the Quicksticks.
In the only B-Grade game played on Saturday, Tumut Red won a hard-fought contest against Adelong Gold 1-0.
As the score suggests, it was an even game with both teams having opportunities to score.
However, the defence of both teams made this task difficult.
Matilda Carmody and Isliah Kapoor defended well for Gold, making Red work hard in attack.
With Eliza Roche home on holidays, she was a real asset to the Gold team, controlling the play in the middle.
Hayley Foster and Sara Hannan tried hard all game in attack for Gold but were unable to get past Red’s strong defence.
For Tumut Red, Liana Smithson ran all game, covering one end of the field to the other.
Reds Adrian Barnard was strong in defence, blocking attack after attack from Adelong Gold.
Karidee Streckfuss had the strongest game of the season yet, never giving up and always fighting for possession. Tumut Red were able to score a goal in the second half through Katie Jeffery, who is always solid for the Red team.
