Sharni Williams and her Australian Women’s Sevens side have put their recent Tokyo Olympics disappointment behind them, winning the opening HSBC World Series Cup in Dubai.
Playing on Friday, Saturday and Sunday, the Australian side went through the series undefeated.
The Aussie Women’s sevens kicked off their return to the World Series in style, with a convincing win over the USA and an opening try to Sharni Williams was enough to break the American defence before the Green and Golds piled on the points.
The Australia side then defeated Spain 34-nil on Friday and Brazil 38-5 on Saturday to top their pool.
In their toughest win, Williams starred, scoring two tries and slotting a conversion as Australia defeated France 24-22 in the Cup semi-final on Saturday, before helping her side to a massive 22-7 win over Fiji in the final on Sunday.
Williams easily had her best tournament in recent years, scoring four tries and managing seven conversions, with her youthfully exuberant Australian teammates proving too good for their rivals.
The second round of the HSBC World Series will again be held in Dubai with teams readying for the quick back-up to play this coming Friday and Saturday.
