Tumut’s Edward Smith is off to the National Junior High Finals Rodeo in Iowa USA in June after his superb performance in the Australian High School Rodeo Finals at Bendemeer.
Ed competed in the Saddle Steer Ride as well as the Junior Bull Ride where he finished the competition achieving equal first in the Junior Bull Ride.
Edward, who is 13 and is about to start Year 8 at McAuley Catholic College, enjoyed the social side of the Rodeo Finals as much as the competition.
“It was a lot of fun and I met lots of new people,” he said.
Competition-wise, he didn’t expect to do quite so well.
“I was a bit surprised,” he said.
“It was my goal, but I was a bit shocked.”
He is very much looking forward to the National Junior High Finals.
“I’m excited. I can’t wait,” he said.
“I haven’t been to American before.”
Despite his youth, Edward takes the physical and mental rigours of rodeo in his stride.
“It doesn’t bother me,” he said.
